Event Wrap-Up: "8x8+1: Bending Pixels" Photography Exhibit and Fundraiser for the GHAC

On October 24, group88 held its first charity event, "8x8+1: Bending Pixels." A phenomenal event, we showcased 9 distinctive photographers each displaying 8 works that showed off their artistry with digital photography and post-processing manipulation. The artists were:

Dennis Barnicle

With the advent of the digital revolution, Dennis Barnicle is returning to photography after drifting away from it in the early seventies. Dennis has spent the last several years developing the tools and techniques to take a concept from capture to print with complete control at every step. Dennis’  commercial work includes weddings, public service projects and a magazine cover.

Juliano Barrotti

Director, cinematographer, producer, photographer and writer, Juliano Barrotti was born in Rome, Italy and once studied under Federico Fellini. Juliano has worked in the film industry from U.S. to South Africa. He is currently president of Barrotti Pictures Inc. in New York City, a commercial production company. Juliano’s awards include Photography Laureates Photographer of the Year 2008 for Outstanding Achievement in Fine Art Photography, Best Fine Art Photography 2008, 36 International Commercial Awards and 24 Clio's.

Jim Coon

From his early days of using the first version of Photoshop, Jim Coon has been manipulating photos in personal and professional work. Represented as an artist at Arts Exclusive Gallery since 1991, Jim’s work has also appeared in Real Art Ways, The Buttonwood Tree Gallery and The Photo Lab Gallery. Jim is currently working on an experimental body of work focused on portraiture.

Derek Dudek

Derek Dudek specializes in creating portraits for advertising, editorial and corporate clients. With a background in the professional world that stems from corporate communications to major motion picture production, Derek crafts dynamic still and moving images. His award-winning work appears in numerous ads, publications, exhibitions and collections.

Rich Hollant

Award-winning designer Rich Hollant is a visual artist in the way that John Cag e was a sound artist. He records moments and attempts to reconcile the lens perception with his more complex and imperfect memories of the moment captured. A collection entitled "Precious Little Things", is a poignant exploration of fleeting bits of content determined to stay constant in defiance of time passing. A film student from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Rich’s work has been selected for the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.

kHyal

kHyal is an artist, writer and designer. Passionate about technology, she has been making digital images, primarily self-portraits, since the early eighties using Amiga and Macintosh computers. Her work has been exhibited in the American Visionary Art Museum, Housatonic Museum of Art, the Outsider Art Fair, Intuit, the Cooper Union; and galleries from New York to London.

Richard Murkland

Richard Murkland’s photography is an extension of his passion for people, landscapes, animals, waterfalls, beaches, streams, brooks... actually water of just about any description. Richard creates images that represent what his imagination sees, but induces a willful suspension of disbelief when viewed. In addition, Richard likes to capture the excitement and emotion at events of all types and sells most of his work as prints or as licensed images.

Sonny Parlin

Sonny Parlin is a photographer, designer, artist, father, husband and constant studen t of life. Sonny’s was previously a photojournalist and holds a degree from The Photography Institute, where he was mentored by photographers renowned in the industry. Sonny approaches each photo like it has a unique story to tell. But getting a great shot is only the beginning. After each session, Sonny spends time processing and color correcting each image to add that final bit of magic.

Jessica Rosario

Presently working on her degree at the Hartford Art School, Jessica Rosario was one of a few students who received the University of Hartford President to President Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement. Jessica’s photographs contain a touch of realism, distortion, and an element of fantasy. Images of the usual childhood toys and dolls haunted Jessica and have now worked their way into her art. The series, "The Other Side Of The Tale," is comprised of self-portraits.

The night's activities included:

  • A great turnout with 80+ attendees and a total of over $2,000+ raised!

  • Guest participation in our art! Through an interactive portrait session with artist Richard Hollant, guests become part of the art.

  • Silent auction with 8 pieces from each artist. $500 raised!

  • The incredible musical talents of electronic violinist Ben Dean -- we watched Ben create music right before our ears!

  • All ticket proceeds, 50% of sales and all winning silent auction bids will benefit the Greater Hartford Arts Council.

  • Wine donated from M&R Liquors and fabulous food from Chive's and Suzi's Mom -- thanks Mom!

Event Wrap-Up: "Online Interactive: Come Play With the Latest Social Media Tools"

This was a fun, informative meeting. The speaker knew his subject well and presented it in a relaxed, casual manner that was perfect for the end of a long day. I learned a lot about some of the new tools out there, and how I can use them to grow my business.  -- Melanie Garmin

On Thursday, October 16, group88 brought in social media maverick Pete Glyman of Geezeo to help us play with social media tools.

Because Pete has built a social media site, through Geezeo, he has to know what he's talking about. From Facebook and Twitter to newbies like ning, the biggest question is: where should you spend your time? The session was hands-on and kicked back. We played around with the different tools on the big screen while Pete helped us understand how these tools can be relevant to our business and our life.
